This is very disturbing - six citizens (some of whom are minors) are being held for murder. None is allowed to speak to a lawyer. One of them confessed to the crime, incriminating the others, but under intensive questioning by the Shin Bet (a security service which has been known to exceed the moderate physical pressure its authorized to use). Did the young man fold under the extreme pressure and give a false confession to put an end to the intensity of the questioning? Did he assume that the verdict was preordained against him and was hoping for some leniency? Unfortunately, well never know, since the State denied him the presence of legal counsel (who could also bear witness to the intensity of the questioning). It goes without saying that the government should take any measure to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice. This is true for any crime, but it takes on extra importance in this case, considering the stakes. However, if the suspects are denied the due process and rights that any other citizen (including rapists and other murderers) enjoy, the inevitable conviction will be forever cast under a cloud of doubt. As much as Id like to see justice served, Id rather the the case not rest on a confession which the Shin Bet beat out of a young man/minor who didnt even have a lawyer present.
