This is what Ive been saying all along about the arithmetic section of common core. It is confusing to we who were taught the old way of subtraction of borrowing. But this is the way weve trained our brains. Ericksons frustration comes from the fact that he doesnt understand it And YES this is a poorly formed example. But it also shows Ericksons laziness. Part of the Erickson empire is web based. Ericksons failure to use the very tool he takes advantage of to make part of his money to simply look up a better explanation or take the time to preform this simple task shows his unconcern for his daughters education. Math is simply patterns. This new method is simply teaching pattern recognition. If its difficult for Erickson its only because he doesnt use the method daily, reinforcing its patterns and methods. Math is not like riding a bike and performing complex equations in your head is something that must be practiced and used repeatedly to reinforce. It seems Erickson would simply rather take out his smart phones calculator and let it do the work for him.
