This is what remains of the former Parish Church of Caerau, Cardiff dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Built in 1290 on the site of an older church on the site of the large Caerau Hillfortwhich might have been refortified as a Lloyd for a Welsh chieftain or king. The church was closed and deconsecrated in 1957, then rebuilt by the then curate, Fr Victor Jones with the help of local labour and raised 10, 000 pounds, quite a feat before the age of the internet, it was reopened and flourished until 1973 when it was closed and deconsecrated again, it was sold to South Glamorgan County Council for a pound in 1983. The council promised to turn it into a heritage centre .That was an empty promise and what you see is the neglect of the local council. There are a bunch dedicated volunteers led by Delia Jay a founder of the Friends of St Marys, at Caerau, with the support of ACE under Dave Horton, and Cllr Peter Bradbury and Elaine Simmonds but time is running out for lonely St Marys.
