This is why shoes + icy conditions do not mix!! Wowza. We had an intense temp plunge over the weekend. Went to the barn & freaked out when I saw my mare standing with her left front foot pointeda la ballerina. My friends Peruvian had the same issue w/ her front right. Our first time dealing with ice balls. Good thing the farrier is coming to pull shoes for the season in a few days! We took turns chipping & picking at their feet, almost an hour to get them ice-free. (Thank G for patient ponies that are great w/ their feet being handled!) Anyone have suggestions/short cuts for ways to get ice balls out with less muscle? We had the girls stand in the sand in the arena. Our barn isnt insulated but its still warmer than outside, and after awhile it did get easier to chip away. Theyll be barefoot soon, but in case this ever happens again, Im curious to know if there are any tricks of the trade for dealing with ice balls.
