This isnt new, but I only recently became aware of it. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I am right now! Last year, the Royal Society Journal made its archives from before 70 years ago permanently free to access. This means that hundreds of fascinating historical papers are now completely free to access. You can read Isaac Newton’s first published scientific paper, geological work by a young Charles Darwin, and Benjamin Franklin’s celebrated account of his electrical kite experiment. As you trawl though them, youll find some bizarre experiments from the dawn of peer reviewed publishing - including accounts of monstrous calves, grisly tales of students being struck by lightning, and early experiments on to how to cool drinks “without the Help of Snow, Ice, Haile, Wind or Niter, and That at Any Time of the Year.” At the same time as this announcement last year, the Royal Society announced its first ever completely open access journal Open Biology. You can access the full archive here: bit.ly/VjvBbR Enjoy!
