This letter may appear in the Greensboro News and Record. It concerns something which my national church did which I vehemently disagree with. When one belongs to any religious organization of substantial size, there may be periods of soul searching concerning the positions taken by that church and its leadership. This is one of those times for many Presbyterians across this nation. A month ago the Presbyterian Church, USA, General Assembly voted to divest from companies which enable Israeli occupation of Palestine, particularly the West Bank. This decision comes at a time of violent Islamic extremism creating chaos and slaughter across much of the Middle East and large parts of Africa, and openly threatening attacks against the United States and all other western nations. In Nigeria and Kenya and Somalia, thousands of citizens have been murdered simply because they were Christians. Concerned Presbyterians see no divestiture from companies which deal with large areas of Islamic control and influence, and we wonder if the decision against Israel wasnt just another example of the political correctness which often characterizes both religious and educational institutions in this nation. Church leaders say the issue is highly complex and members should be understanding of the differences in opinion. Frankly, I suspect a large majority of Presbyterians would oppose this decision, and its our church leaders themselves who need to be more understanding.
