This made me cry. My mom has worked in this area for over 35 years lending a hand and being a friend to people in need, (at Compass Community services formerly Travelers Aid Society) When i was a little kid i used to take the bus to work with her everyday. We would stop at Pearl sometimes to buy watercolors and stuff, market street was so vibrant and beautiful with lots of people around. I remember one time my mom was carrying a big bag of oranges over her shoulder to bring to work and these guys were like, Can I get one? they were half joking but of course she gave them some and they were like, hey thanks lady! i still remember rubbernecking the posters on the Crazy Horse everyday and being so curious about what was in there. We would eat lunch at the fountain at civic center and my mom would let me break up crusts from rainbow pizza and feed the pigeons right out of my hands! That was the coolest thing to me. People talk about cities like theyre oceans where waves just naturally wash in and out, but its not natural, the changes usually happen based on the desires of white people with lots of money who like to do stupid, boring shit all the time instead of sharing time, energy, money or space with others. (whether they want to fly from cities or move back into them). ummm... smash capitalism!
