This made my day. Can you think why!!? From a very dedicated super-student of mine... I want to share an experience I had yesterday which exemplifies my shift in thinking. I bought my horse as a three year old with the intention of training her to take me to dressage competitions at some point. I had very much joined the ranks of owners of young horses who expect their horse to be doing a..b..c by the time they are 4..5..6 etc. At this point I never really felt totally happy with this mode of thinking and had unintentionally let myself and my horse be pressurised. It soon became very clear that I had a horse that didnt fit that mould (or me!). After years of searching for answers to physical and behavioural issues I am most definitely on the right path with my wonderful mare. I attended a dressage competition with a friend yesterday and had a period of feeling a little bit down at the prospect of not being able to do the same with Missy. On returning to the yard I spent half an hour just being with her which resulted in her resting her head in my arms, lovely and calm, taking breaths in time with mine. I felt a true connection with her. This morning I have taken her into the school where she has done the most lovely free lungeing around a circle of targets all the time carrying herself well and in balance and moving freer than Ive ever seen. After this she keenly followed me to the mounting block where she lined herself up and stood as good as gold for me to get on and waited calmly before moving off to a vocal cue. We spent 10 minutes just walking, stopping, backing up on cue and generally having a nice time together. This is the first time, since I bought her four years ago, that I have confidently got on her on my own with no anxiety and with no-one around. I am filled with joy....no dressage rosette could ever give me this feeling. Thank you Max :0)
