This may be a new study but the benefits of delaying cord clamping - TopicsExpress

This may be a new study but the benefits of delaying cord clamping have been known for a very long time. Just some of these benefits are outlined in Ina May Gaskins book Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth..........studies show that delayed cord clamping allows between twenty and fifty percent of the babys blood volume to flow into the baby. On the other hand......Preempting the physiological process is likely to increase problems such as retained placenta, postpartum hemorrhage, and respiratory distress in babies My own belief is that by delaying the time of clamping off the cord until after the pulsating has stopped (usually about 10mins after delivery) allows the baby time to adjust on entering this world, their physical connection to mom is cut when it is no longer supplying baby (because it has stopped pulsing) not before therefore decreaseing the stress and the effects of this stress caused by suddenly being cut off. The option of delaying cord clamping would need to be discussed with your doctor or midwife as, in the hospital environment, it is generally done at the first opportunity.
