This morning God knew that we REALLY needed a good laugh! Chris, not in uniform, rode with me to drop Skylar off at school. As we were waiting to pull out of the parking lot, a little grandma-type lady gave us a smile & tapped on our window. Chris, being the super nice guy he is, rolled down his window & wished her good morning. She then handed Chris a pamphlet & said Thank you so much!. I quickly glanced over at the paper & saw the title WHAT FAMILIES NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MILITARY RECRUITING IN HIGH SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES & the following banter occurred: Me: Did that grandma really just hand you anti-military propaganda? Chris: Yep…pretty sure that is what this is. Me: That is HILARIOUS! Wonder if shed have handed that to you had you been in uniform. Chris: pretty sure she would have given me her evil look! Me: What does the pamphlet say? Chris: that the military is predatory, that recruiters lie (which can happen), & that basically the military is evil. That about sums it up! And then we laughed harder than we have laughed in a LONG time!!!! In the pamphlet there was a list of points to consider before signing a military enlistment agreement & number 9 states: Military personnel may not exercise all the civil liberties enjoyed by civilians. So let me share a few thoughts with you: -Yes, military personnel give up many civil liberties when they become members of our armed forces: for one, they can not speak negatively about their Commander in Chief & often times their movement is restricted. This is made VERY clear before you join the military! -It is because of our armed forces, that you as a civilian, have these civil liberties! Freedom isnt free, friends! -I am amazed at the amount of people who truly believe that if we didnt have a military, that we could all just live in peace! Really???!!! Totally not how it works, friends! -The freedom that this woman has to voice her opinion, whether I agree with it or not, didnt just happen! It was fought for & obtained by the sacrificial service of many men & women through the years! -I also have to remember that my husband, dad, & grandfathers all served to defend her Freedom of Speech & that even though I think she is completely wrong, I have no desire for her to be silenced. She has the right to share her thoughts, & thanks to the many brave men & women who have served our country, I have the right to share mine!
