This morning I was walking around the house with a painter and he pointed out a decent size hole from a woodpecker on the wall by our guest room. (I was surprised no one has heard this going on since our guest room is almost continually occupied by one musician or another, but I guess they will sleep through anything.) Ive now become internet educated on various ways to discourage woodpeckers that include dangling CDs or metal pie plates by strings, wind chimes, broadcasting the sounds of woodpeckers in distress interspersed with the sound of predator bird and fake owls with spinning heads and flapping wings that hoot. These all have some degree of success but nothing seems to be the best solution other than blocking the area they are trying to get at by using netting. Most of these solutions will not be that easy to implement because the area near the roof of the 2nd story. I did stumble across one clever remedy from the Audubon Society using helium party balloons on long, secure strings well attached to the something of the ground so they dont blow away. (I was actually surprised that this suggestion came from Audubon, but it would actually be the easiest for me to implement). If anyone has had success with anything other than hurting them, please share. We had this happen some years ago and the woodpeckers really caused a lot of damage to the siding and Id like to avoid a repeat before this gets to the same state.
