This morning an envelope was lying on my table, when I opened it. I was delighted to see the following letter with a cheque of Rs 5100 in favour of the Regional Director, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Regional Centre, Chandigarh. The sender is neither a political leader nor a corporate leader, but an NSS Programme Officer (Mr Ramesh Malik), who is a lecturer in Delhi. Mr Malik has recently attended one of workshops on Social Harmony and National Unity. In the letter he had mentioned “Behaviour and working style of the organiser and whole staff of RGNIYD was excellent and touch my heart. I feel conference hall needed some maintenance as dry cleaning of chairs, change of table clothes, repair of chairs and mikes system etc. I am sending a Cheque No 467448 of Rs 5100 for this maintenance purpose.” Unlike NGOs and religious organisations, I have not experienced people voluntarily donating money for the government institute. This Rs 5100 is so valuable for us, which cannot be compared with even Rs 5 million dollar, it reflects his confidence and trust in the organisation and the work we are doing in transforming the lives of the young people. Just imagine, if everyone make a small contributions to different organisations run by the government it could be a school, a hospital, sanitation, prison, playground etc. It will increase people ownership and significantly improve the organisations efficiency, effectiveness and accountability to meet the expectations of the people. I am not against offering wealth to the religious organisations but when we can make peoples lives better by helping the institutions established by the government, the impacts of your action can be more powerful than your prayers and offerings to the God or Goddess. If we have Mr Malik for every school, every primary health centre, every police station and every government institution, just imagine, what difference we can make collectively. On behalf of my team and my own behalf I would like to thank and express our deep sense of appreciation to Mr Malik, like you we all at the RGNIYD moved by your gesture, concern and helping attitude. We will send you the picture of the conference hall with new look!
