This morning my sister posted a status about my parents struggle with their insurance company since tropical storm arthur dropped several trees through their house. I wanted to add a few things to her comments and get this story out to my FB friends as well. My parents who are now in their mid 70s are normally private people who do not believe in making any fuss or bad feelings amongst anyone. They have worked hard all their lives and never had alot of the luxuries that most of enjoy ourselves. They have paid insurance premiums for over 40 years and never filed an insurance claim. 78 days ago Tropical Storm Arthur dropped several trees through the roof of their house. The day after the storm I was talking to the insurance adjuster who had said he would be at my parents house the next day but never showed up so we called him. He said he had no gas in his car and didnt want to wait in the long line ups for gas, I knew at that point we were in trouble. I asked him where my parents were supposed to stay as the fire chief in Hoyt advised them they should not stay in the house. The adjuster rudely replied that is not my problem. Now alarm bells were really going off. My parents stayed anyways until it became to unsafe to do so. Since that day my sister has been in constant daily communication with the agent at Cambridge SIA Insurance and the Claims adjuster at AMG Claims. One promise after the other has been broken and there has not been one thing resolved. the floors and roof structure are barely holding up and will soon be collapsing on all their belongings, the insurance company has made no commitment to move their belongings. Now due to the smell of mould and wet insulation they stay with someone at night and return home during the day. This is taking a toll on their health, Dad has once already been rushed by ambulance to the Saint John Hospital with chest pains as a result of stress (doctors words). Mom has a degenerative spine and in a great deal pain 24 hours a day and cannot relax in her home anymore. Last week my sister finally got to talk to a Manager at Wawanesa (the actual insurance company) and was promised within a day that we would have an answer. Now.......78 days later we are told we have to wait for a structural engineer to show up and do an assesment because the contractor (Winmar) that they sent to do the original assesment never included any damage to the floors. They said the engineer may show up by next wednesday. Give or take a few weeks for him to do the paperwork, send it in to claims, let claims do their thing and then start looking for a contractor......might be in by Christmas. So heres the deal...If we have not got anything in writing from the insurance company by Wednesday of this week, I will be contacting the Daily Gleaner and CTV News to do a story as well as a good lawyer. Our family is finally emotionallly drained to the point that we need to act. Please be careful who you are insured with, some companys such as this one are only their to get their monthly payments and have no concern for their clients. Please feel free to share this post as we do not want others to have to suffer the same fate as my parents are currenty dealing with.
