This morning upon pulling in to my sons elementary school to drop - TopicsExpress

This morning upon pulling in to my sons elementary school to drop him off with his nurse at the front gate, I drove in just in time to watch a van pull into the handicap spot. The side door slides open and out hops a fully able bodied young lady, she grabs her belongings, closes the door behind her and runs off to school. I am probably steaming at the ears at this point, as I look around the traffic packed parking lot, a line out the driveway of parents waiting to pull up and drop their child off. Mind you there are about 15 empty parking spots available, yet a traffic jam caused by people who dont have time to park. How rude. I patiently watch, my foot on the brake as this woman backs out, young and full of life. Perfectly able to park in a non handicapped spot. She drives off, averting my gaze as I slowly move in to the handicapped spot and place my sons placard on the dash. I get out, pop the trunk, pull out his walker, open his door, which is too hard for his little crooked fingers to open, I assist him in climbing out of the car, which is way too small for us now. His prosthetic leg is Bent in half, stuck between the seat and the stool he rests his feet on. I free his leg, help him stand up into his walker, gather his backpack, suction bag and his emergency medical supply bag. Handing him and his small hospital off to his LVN, I kiss his cheek goodbye, even though he hates it when I do that in public, he does not say anything but Bye Momma. There is a beauty to this struggle of doing everyday things that others take for granted. Think about us the next time you Go to drop your child off at the street, dumping them off in a parking lot, not able to get out of the car and say goodbye. Think about the open parking spots you passed up to take one of two handicapped spots, just to save a few minutes. Be grateful for your life, and through our struggle may you be humbled.
