This object is part of a whooper sternum, and was featured in our Artifact or Artifiction fundraiser held last Saturday. Before Conservator Alyssa Becker-Burns reassembled the sternum it lay in four pieces like parts of a strange puzzle. Extremely thin and fragile, the broken edges looked like they fit together, but because they were no longer in plane, they did not match well. This meant there wasn’t much of a surface between pieces for an adhesive to stick too. The problem was solved by backing the joins with strips of handmade Japanese tissue coated with a compatible adhesive, selected for its reversibility and long term stability.
