This one blew me away! A Texas Tortoise (Gopheras berlandieri) - TopicsExpress

This one blew me away! A Texas Tortoise (Gopheras berlandieri) encountered with Kevin Loughlin of Wildside Nature Tours. Saturday morning we explored Laguna Atascosa NWR and met up with this living dinosaur as it ambled along a dirt road. To contemplate that this rugged creature (or at least its ancestors) have inhabited N. America for roughly *50 million years* is humbling. These miniature battle tanks reside south of San Antonio in southern Texas and are now considered “threatened” in that state. This one’s a male as evidenced by the pronounced gular scute below the animal’s chin. Look at that nearly impenetrable defense posed by a combination of shell, powerful jaws, and heavily plated forelegs. Such a beast!
