This osprey was rescued by one of the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary’s volunteers this past week. He was found on the ground at a golf course and was unable to fly. Examination by the Sanctuary’s medical staff revealed that the bird was very thin and too weak to take flight. Ospreys hunt by diving into the water feet first to grab fish with their sharp talons. Every failed attempt can cost an osprey large amounts of energy and sometimes they can become too weak to hunt or fly. After some fluids and a few good meals, the osprey was put into our waterbird flight enclosure to regain his strength and put on a few pounds. We anticipate a full recovery and release back into the wild in the upcoming weeks. Come visit Sanctuary and learn about the work we do rehabilitate sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife, we are open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10am - 4:30pm.
