This paragraph is in reference to the picture I just posted (below): Here is another open and honest moment: September 18th, I went to the gym for the fist time in about 5 years. I was 58, 138lbs and 28% body fat. I was completely and utterly disgusted...gross was my immediate verbal reaction, but my mental reaction was much stronger. Here is how our mind plays such crazy tricks on our self esteem and our well-being. When I heard that number, I felt like the 45% photo!!! I could hardly stand to look at myself for the next week or 2, because I was so furious with myself for allowing this to happen to my body. But then I realized, 28 is just another number. Like the number on a scale, like age, body fat is yet another number that allows us to see ourselves in some sort of sickly skewed imagery of self. Im not suggesting we ignore these numbers, they are important and I believe help to keep us on track and attain our goals. Personally, rather than allowing numbers to tell me how great I look or feel I look for a few other indicators: 1) small visual changes in my body. Its not vanity to look at yourself in the mirror each morning, take pride in your body and own it! Watch for those changes in your muscle tone of your arms, legs, belly etc...2) Pay attention to how your clothes fit you. Maybe they are a little looser in the thigh or waist, GREAT! You may not have noticed these changes in the mirror, but your clothes dont lie... and 3) Dont compare yourself to anyone else in your life. If you are a large framed person, you will never look like that petite girl with the 6-pack bouncing around the gym each morning. BUT you CAN be a more fit & healthier YOU, with a 6-pack bouncing around the gym each morning. Everyone has the ability to look like any of the bodies in this picture. Its easy to have the body of the 3rd row: do nothing. BUT if you want a body like those in row 1, or even row 2 it will take work, dedication and a desire to want to look and feel better... In health, Amy
