This past Sunday we had Pastor Matt from our sister church, Journey Church of Atlanta, as a special guest speaker. He shared a message entitled “The Tyranny of Time” from Ecclesiastes 3:1-15. We can take one of two views on the passage of time. The first is man’s view where we are oppressed by the tyranny of time. What have I done with my life? Did I make enough money? Did I raise a Godly family? Did I live well? We are in denial of the fact that we exist in a fallen and chaotic world which causes us to think that God is out of control when bad things happen to us. In reality, the exact opposite is true. Nothing highlights God’s control more than catastrophe. We think that God doesnt love us when he causes us pain like a child getting a shot at the doctor’s office. Just like a child cannot grasp the concept of vaccines, we don’t cope with difficulty well because of our shallow view of our own lives. The second view of time is God’s view. He is the one who places the concept of eternity in our hearts. That’s why we only feel complete when we accept His love. The struggle for control of our lives is fueled by a fear of insignificance. Everything under the sun will leave us short, but everything over the sun in the heavenly realm will complete and satisfy us. That’s why relying on ourselves to create significance becomes a form of slavery. God desires that you live free in your salvation. Strength in the Lord is paradoxical because it requires you to be weak and to give up control. In that moment, His grace becomes sufficient for us. God’s love is infinite in scope in the way it manifests in your life. Allow yourself to be undone by the beauty of Christ. Look at what Jesus has done for you and let your heart be compelled to surrender and give Him full control.
