This past weekend Chatham Crew did some testing to check the distances they could see various objects floating in optimal weather conditions. The results were surprising; a bright orange soccer ball (about the size of a person’s head floating above the water) disappeared at about 400 metres. The crew then blew up a big, orange garbage bag and floated that next to the soccer ball. It was spotted more than 3 times farther away, just shy of 1 nautical mile! Our volunteers all carry one of these garbage bags in their gear vests. That way, if they go overboard they have something big and orange to wave over their head. Might be something your lifejackets could benefit from. Blow it up (or use the wind to inflate) and then hold the end shut and wave it in the air. It’s small, inexpensive and could save your life. #ChathamCrew #RCMSAR #savinglivesatsea
