This past year was an interesting one... I had five different jobs, and while none of them were great, they all taught me some things about myself and the world we live in; I also had four months off, which meant plenty of time for 90s shows, puzzles and LEGO (winning!); my mom had a craniotomy for an acute subdural hematoma, what was possibly the scariest experience of my life (a close second was that time at the end of summer when I left my phone in one of the Lakeshore parks and had to bike in the dark of the night to retrieve it--hello hookers, rapists and drug dealers); I said goodbye to some people and hello again to others; and I like to think I grew up a little (although thats open to debate). But the highlight of my year was the friendship I developed with my mom following her surgery. Its amazing to think how one moment--good or bad--can change so many things, and how the beauty in that change can come from finding a sense of peace and strength in the midst of even the most frightening and bleak of circumstances. There isnt a more poignant way to realize the fragility of life than coming close to losing someone you love. It is only in that moment that you fully grasp all the things youve ever taken for granted. And as this year slowly approaches its finish line, I am able to more fully appreciate how lucky I am for all the different reasons. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful 2015.
