This photo Mr Hatfield sitting on a bench end of millers road - just infont of Flemmos pool. The story of Flemmos Pool ( Flemmings Pool) The Flemming family were a very early Altona family ( Lawrence Flemming started the first school in his backyard (30 x 11) shed on 27th October 1915 and was instrumental in Altona Primary school building budget being granted in 1921 - attached lease and letter re new school. Back to the story. Altona did not connect to the melbourne water supply until mid 1920s so residents relied on tank water. The flemming boys worked at the newport railyards and came home on the train to seaholme station. Of course covered in grease / dirt and dust. They would detour past the little swimming hole at the end of Victoria Street ( now Millers Road) to wash the dirt and grim off prior to heading home ( blyth street) - this was to save the precious tank water...............hence the spot became Flemmos Pool............... does anyone have old photos of Flemmos Pool.......
