This photograph of women brickyard workers in Ebbw Vale c. 1900 was published in the Gwent Gazette on 20 December 1984. The 1920 Ordnance Survey map shows the Brynhelig Brickyard (New Brick Yard) at the top of Brynheulog Street, and Gantra Brickyard at the top of Harcourt Street in Ebbw Vale. There was also a yard south of Newtown (The Furnace Brickworks?). Ebbw Vale was known for its yellow pressed bricks made from clay from the area. It is not known which yard these ladies worked in and a look at the census in the area of Gantra and Brynhelig in 1891 and 1901 reveals no female brick workers, though there is a Sarah Ann Thomas aged 17 described as a general labourer living in Armoury Row in 1891. Does anyone have any information about the photograph or female brick yard workers please?
