This poem found me many times since I was a teenager. I never understood it when the head girl of my school first read it in assembly when I was about 13. It kept finding me until finally in my 20s my Greek Egyptian godmother gifted me a book of Cavafys poetry.. I began to listen. Its message so destabilising to the outcome-based philosophy I had been trained in. But when I read it again during my very first heart healing adventure to Central America.. it began to infiltrate into my cells like the soul food grace my being had been yearning for. Now, some years on, surrounded by other journeyers eagerly wanting to arrive on this spiritual path.. my heart flooded with the memory of familiar unquenchable desire to get there… so this is dedicated to you.. to all of us.. who are re-remembering what these Ithakas mean… thank you for journeying to Ithaka with me.. you make this journey home so much richer.. so much love. -*A*- ITHACA [1910, 1911] ~ C.P.Cavafys poem Ithaca, As you set out for Ithaca hope that your journey is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery. Laistrygonians and Cyclops, angry Poseidon-dont be afraid of them: youll never find things like that on your way as long as you keep your thoughts raised high, as long as a rare sensasion touches your spirit and your body. Laistrygonians and Cyclops, wild Poseidon-you wont encounter them unless you bring them along inside your soul, unless your soul sets them up in front of you. Hope that your journey is a long one. May there be many summer mornings when, with what pleasure, what joy, you come into harbors youre seeing for the first time; may you stop at Phoenician trading stations to buy fine things, mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony, sensual perfume of every kind- as many sensual perfumes as you can; and may you visit many Egyptian cities to learn and learn again from those who know. Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what youre destined for. But dont hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so that youre old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all youve gained on the way, not expecting Ithaca to make you rich. Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you would have not set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaca wont have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, youll have understood by then what these Ithacas mean. ~ Recited by Sir Sean Connery and with music specially composed by Vangelis.
