This political cartoon does a wonderful job of clearly illustrating what so many people seem to fail to grasp ... And, that is the enormous complexity and difficulties faced by our public school systems, that are not able to pick and choose the students that they must teach. Perhaps we could do a much better job, if we could stop our tendencies to: (1) always wanting to solve complex problems with very simple solutions. I.e. Always looking for the magic bullet ... (2) failing or resisting to openly admit that ALL of us are part of the problem. (3) getting our solutions from people who have little or no first hand experience in teaching. I.e. (a) A system that selects school principles and administrators that have little or no class room teaching experience, (b) School boards that too often contain very few if any professional educators, and (c) Asking teachers to take on and solve problems that should be the responsibilities of parents, the community, social services, neighbors, police, policy makers, friends & relatives, the business community, and people who erroneously think that because they do not have children that they do not have any skin in the game. (d) The public would be appalled if the DOD selected officers with no actual direct experience in the mission to be military commanding officers of combat units.
