This post came from my husband - which concerned me right away because it involved cats and, well, he is a dog person ... but this is GREAT! When I first met Paul, he asked me when I would be declawing my house cats and I said over my dead body. And here is why. Declawing is ILLEGAL across Europe and in other countries around the world. Only in the Americas (US/Canada) do we think this is OK to do because we are too lazy to train our cats not to use their claws on our precious furniture. According to an Associated Press poll, 60% of pet owners in American (Canada included) and 55% of cat owners, think it is perfectly OK to declaw cats. They are SO wrong and misinformed. Americans value their possessions so much over what is best for the animals that we opt for painful, crippling procedures that result in thousands of cats being put down because of oh, they wont use the litter box and oh, the cat lashes out and bites ... so Im going to turn him over to the shelter because I cant deal with this. Very rarely do these cats ever make it out of the shelter...after all, who wants to adopt a cat who wont use the litter box and bites. ALL of these -- litter box aversion, aggressions (especially biting) -- are directly linked to declawing. In a country that fights for treatment of animals, it just shocks me that we turn a blind eye to the torture that is endured. It isnt cutting of a fingernail. It is the hacking off of a bone that results in severe pain and arthritis that forever alters the life of a cat. Most people will say oh, I declawed my cat and he was just fine. Really? Cause you know how your cat feels? You dont notice when he lands after jumping that he slightly winces, or that he walks a little more tenderly when he gets older? That is a result of declawing. And that peeing on your carpet and couches - you can thank declawing for that! Because more than likely you didnt heed the vets advice about getting soft cat litter so when your newly injured cat stepped into the litterbox with its paws bleeding and fresh open wounds, that it endured so much pain from the chemical litter (or big bulky litter) that it blamed the litterbox for the pain it felt. That the softness of the carpet became his safe place to eliminate. Instead, you grab him, rub his nose in it and toss him harshly back into the litterbox where the litter stings his paws again, only reaffirming that it is to blame for the pain he feels in his paws. If you are fine with the declawing of cats, then you better be fine with the ancient tradition of docking a dogs tail and ears, or the tail of a horse. ITS THE SAME THING - we are altering the animal for OUR benefit. Its cosmetic and superficial and is NOT in the interest of the animal. OK rant over - DONT DECLAW.
