This post is the first of a series of posts which explain the reason behind some of the traditions followed in India. 1. Toe Rings. Toe rings are worn by married Indian women. They have many health benifits. Toe rings have an effect on the menstrual cycle. There is considered to be a nerve that passes through the second toe in the foot. Pressing this nerve helps maintain the regularity of the periods. Thus helping in bearing a child. In India toe rings are usually made of silver. Now, silver is a very good conductor of energy. It is considered that it(the toe ring) will help absorb the positive energy from earth and pass it to our bodies. If you notice toe rings are worn on both the feet. This helps in balancing the blood flow and also in keeping the uterus healthy. Also , men used to check(they also do now) whether a woman wears a toe ring or not to know if she is married. 2. Tulasi (Basil) Plant Tulasi plants are present in many Indian homes. They are considered holy and are worshipped . Tulasi plants release O3. This helps in maintaining ecological balance. Also, Tulasi plants play a major role in Ayurveda. It is mainly used in treating respiratory problems, skin disorders, mouth infections and common cold.A decoction of the leaves with honey and ginger is very effective in treating common cold. Tulasi leaves are given as Teertham in Indian temples. It is considered a very good blood purifier. 3. Why do Indians sit on floor while eating? There is a major difference between the way Indians sit and seating culture in western countries. In western countries the temperature is very low and is very apt for bacteria and virus sustenance. So, to avoid diseases, people from these regions sit on a raised platform . Over the years this has been styled into a table. Now in India the the temperatures are high enough for the bacteria not to sustain. So its not a problem to sit on the floor and eat. Now coming to the health dynamic, eating while sitting in sukhasan helps in digestion. This also helps in releasing the energy faster.
