This post is very unlike me but I’ve seen this evening that there are so many posts about the tragic death of Robin Williams. It’s amazing that it’s taken this for people to take depression so seriously whereas people have been suffering in silence for so long. Or not so silently – they just get dismissed. I suffer from depression and I’m not ashamed to say it. For me, it’s a chemical imbalance - no different to being diabetic - and it can be as debilitating as any “recognised” illness can be. But people don’t get it. You get “ be grateful that you have x [substitute nice home, good job, lovely family and friends]”. Yes, we are grateful. “There are always people worse off than you”. Yes, there are. We know that but you’d never say that to someone who had any other type of illness, especially terminal illnesses (and, actually, depression can be a terminal illness, as weve seen) so please don’t say that to us. Ive been told by close friends that Im selfish for feeling depressed in the few time Ive reached out to them.We might be in good physical health but emotional health is just as important We might not look like we’re in pain – most people who have depression don’t just sit there looking glum and they appear to be leading “normal” lives – but they are in pain and theyre struggling. We just learn to paste a smile on our faces because thats what our friends want to see. x
