This post may seems strange for some, and maybe even a little disturbing or creepy, but if you knew Nick you would know this would be right up his alley. If you have a weak stomach you can stop reading here. When Nick was first diagnosed, amputating his leg was definitely spoken of. One day as we were sitting in Chick-fil-a eating lunch Nick nonchalantly asked if he had his leg amputated, if he could have the bones so he could use them for next Halloween. Kind of grossing Auntie and I out, which is a little hard to do since we were raised on a farm. We laughed Ahhhhh Nick!! As cute as he was, he was definitely a creepy little boy, so it was only natural to follow what Nick would have done when we followed his request to have him cremated, and asked for his prosthetic. The funeral home was very gracious to get his ashes to us quickly so that they could be at his service and mentioned they would return the prosthetic at a later date since it was left behind at the crematory. Awesome! I was just happy that I had his ashes on hand and they would be put in the beautiful hand crafted urn that hand been given to me earlier in the day. The nice gentleman from the funeral home actually knew us since his son went to school with Nick. There was definitely an emotional attachment to our story. He called me and asked if he could bring the prosthetic to our home and I gratefully accepted the offer. I didnt think it would really bother me too much, especially knowing this is something Nick would have asked for himself, but when the man handed me the bag my body grew warm and my stomach did a couple of flops. I peeked into the bag and could see the piece of charred metal in the bag. Is it burnt? I stupidly asked. This is all so weird, I thought to myself. We exchanged a few words and he gave me a hug as his wife and cute little baby were in the car. As I drove away I was wondering if I should blog about this and decided to call him back to see if I could even mention the fact that he brought the prosthetic to me. When I write, I often times just touch on the subject, leaving out the more intimate and personal details, especially when dealing with others reputations. This road has been way deeper than what I ever publicize. The man was very gracious and told me that the prosthetic was definitely personal property and I could write whatever I wanted. He then said he needed to apologize to me in the most sincere voice ever. What on earth does he need to apologize to me for I thought? As the poor guy stammered to find words to say Tracy, my wife and I only have a small baby and a sixteen year old boy. We really only have little girl stuff around our house. So, I grabbed the most boyish bag I could find in the house. As I was getting out of the car, my wife asked me if I was freaking nuts for giving you the prosthetic in the bag I picked. I didnt realize........ As I looked over at the bag sitting in in the front seat of my car, I could see that it was a black bag with flames all over it. Definitely suited for a boy!! I about died laughing. Oh, man! I didnt even notice that!! I said. I almost threw up when I handed you the bag, because I felt so bad. he said. I assured him that I was fine with it and I am positive Nicholas was up there laughing as well. We now have the prosthetic that gave my son almost 18 months of mobility. The prosthetic that helped him climb Camelback Mountain and Dragon Fly Trail. The prosthetic that helped him chase alligators and armadillos. The prosthetic that helped him ride bikes and scooters and the waves in Hawaii. Where, otherwise he would have never accomplished those things after being diagnosed. Im not quite sure what we will do with this thing, I have a very hard time looking at it but I know for sure Nick would have wanted it.
