This pretty fish is actually bad news. The lionfish is an invasive species in the Caribbean and Atlantic and its voracious appetite—it can eat about 40 fish an hour—is threatening to wipe out other species, maybe ones we have yet to discover. Marine biologist Carole Baldwin uses a mini-sub (she’s on the right in the photo) to study lionfish behavior around coral reefs 200 to 1,000 feet below the surface. She’ll share her discoveries in the next “Smithsonian Science How?” live webcasts, April 24. Tune in on Thursday! qrius.si.edu/live-webcast-april-24-exploring-unexplored Photo by Barry Brown, Substation Curacao.
