This question from nurse E: Hi, I am currently undertaking my Diploma of Nursing course, and I am also hearing impaired. I wear a Cochlear Implant. I dont classify myself as Deaf. Just someone who has trouble hearing from time to time. I can hear very well, unless I am switched off. Anyways, I am now in the final stages of my course, where we are about to finish off the course in March next year before doing the final clinical placement, only to find that the head teacher confronted me with concerns that I am not going to get a job as an Enrolled Nurse in a hospital due to my hearing. I felt bluntly discriminated by this. The head teacher also mentioned that she has to report this to the Nursing & Midwifery Board, about my hearing. I have gone through 2 rotations of clinical placements with no problems what so ever, except when the batteries go flat. I used to work as AIN in a busy hospital and I didnt have a problem with this. Anyways, my question to other students or nurses other there who have some sort of hearing impairment, how do you function in the workplace, did your manager make some adjustments around to your hearing impairment, did you find it hard to get a job as an Enrolled/Registered Nurse after notifying that you have a hearing impairment. Any other additional information that would be handy would be grateful.
