This reminds me something my recently passed dog Zoot did, When my cat had her first litter of kittens we were very concerned of what he would do. We knew he was cool with one cat, but had no idea how he would react to kittens. About a day after they were born Zoot walked over to the corner between the couch and chair where she had chosen to nurse them and we all get nervous because we think he might eat them. But the cat remains perfectly calm. Then one by one he sniffs each kitten for about 20 seconds and then snorts on each own. He then curled up in a ball in front of the entrance. It dawned on us that the sniff and snort was his sign of approval and he chose to sleep their every day for the next 2 weeks the kittens were being nursed. Every time we picked one up he would watch us closely, and when one crawled off somewhere he would gently pick it up and carry it back. Image a big old husky carrying a kitten in its mouth. He was a good old dog....
