This says so much about so many things. First technology is the great equalizer. Technology kept these men alive in spite of life devastating injuries. Technology allows them to engage in life as participants not simply observers from the side lines to be pitied or ignored by the rest of us. Technology allows them to exceed what most of us will ever do. But its not just technology its their social support system. Their brothers in arms, in some cases literally. They have each other. They protect and support each other. This is not by accident. This cohesion is trained and learned through none other than the military. It is true that without the support of other people most of us wont get far in life. But I have yet to see a class of liberal arts graduates demonstrate this level of commitment to one another. This is a social safety net worthy of the name. Its not merely an arbitrary point below which no one is allowed to fall, but is allowed to wallow. A welfare state is a delegation of social responsibility to a nameless faceless entity that washes our hands of the duty we owe to our nameless faceless brothers who have put their lives on the line for us. What we see here is camaraderie, a devotion to our brother, our neighbor, even to ourselves. Professional nursing was borne out of the military. It was regimented. It was strict. In large part because without that military order people died. There was devotion to the cause, and to each other. There was pride and dignity. Now, we hear nurses eat their young. We gossip, we back stab, we undermine authority wherever we find it. We sacrifice care to get our own way. I am truly thankful that when I began my career I had a Head Nurse, and not a nurse manager. I hope that I can recapture the nobility, dignity, and respect of an earlier time with this project.
