This seems like a nice friendly group so I wonder if I can ask for some advice please.... we have a 20 year old 12.2hh NF mare who was diagnosed with mild laminitis in early June. She was tested for Cushings and EMS - she doesnt have Cushings but does have EMS. Her levels werent very high (140 or so, vet said its common to see 800+) and she wasnt massively overweight. Shes been on box rest for over 8 weeks now, not a blade of grass consumed, and on 4kg of soaked hay in 24 hours and handful of chaff for supplements. This has been tough as you can imagine as shes constantly hungry and bored. Shes been sound for several weeks and is not on any bute now. The glucose test was repeated this week, after the vet said she looked very well and was happy with her weight - but the levels are actually slightly higher! We were so upset as had expected to be able to start getting her back out on a bare paddock. We always use a muzzle. So now weve been told to reduce her hay again and keep her in. No exercise yet. To my way of thinking this is no life for a pony - she cant graze or spend time with the other two and shes hungry all the time. What do we do? What if the levels dont go down? She cant live like this forever, shes miserable and trying to bite us and its not fair on her. Obviously we dont want her to get laminitis again, but this is awful. Has anyone had a similar experience and what was the outcome? Were all feeling very negative so some positive thoughts would be great!
