This song forms part of a cycle ‘Les chansons de la rose’ by Morten Lauridsen (born 1943) on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Though Rilke wrote most of his poetry in German, he has written no less than 400 poems in French. This song is based on a popular folk song, parts of which were used in other songs of the cycle. The work was premièred in 1993. The text translates as: Abandon surrounding abandon, Tenderness touching tenderness… Your oneness endlessly Caresses itself, so they say; Self-caressing through its own clear reflection. Thus you invent the theme of Narcissus fulfilled.
