This story explains me. A wealthy American retired to a village by the sea in Mexico. He noticed that a Mexican came out and sat on the beach every day for a couple of hours, catching fish with a rod. One day, he decided to go down and talk to the fellow. “Hello,” said the American, as the other was reeling one in. “I notice that you catch a few fish here every day. You’re a decent fisherman.” “Thanks,” said the Mexican. “You should think about putting that talent to use,” said the American. “You should stay all day and catch ten times as many fish.” “What would I do with all that fish?” asked the Mexican. “Sell them at the market. Make money.” “Ah!” said the Mexican. “Then I could buy my wife a new shawl.” “No, no,” chided the American. “You save the money. Save it all until you have enough to buy a boat.” “Why should I get a boat?” “So you can catch even more fish and hire a crew.” “Then I could buy a car,” said the Mexican. “No, you don’t spend it. Save it until you can buy another boat. Hire a skipper and another crew.” “Why?” “Over years, if you work hard, and with good luck, you can build a fleet.” “What would I want a fleet for?” “When the time is right, you could sell and make a huge pile of money. Then you could retire.” “What do you mean by ‘retire?’ asked the Mexican. “Have a little place by the sea. Do what you like all day. Go fishing if you want to.” The Mexican got up from his stool, picked up his rod, and said: “Then I’ve been retired for thirty-five years already. Buenos dias, senor.”
