This story highlights what sounds like an increase in enforcement, but regulators are really only finding a smaller fraction of asbestos violators. The number of notified asbestos removal projects have increased exponentially, while the handful of regulatory agency investigators has essentially remained the same, primarily due to political and budgetary constraints. A few examples of larger enforcement cases is typical from year to year; the ratio of enforcement has actually decreased. There are many thousands of asbestos abatement jobs in the state, but you can count the number of DEQ inspectors on one hand.
