This story illustrates the value of excellence in ones work. A man was called to a beach to paint a boat. He took all the material needed and got started. He was painting the boat a vibrant red, as he was hired to do. While he was painting, he noticed that the paint started running through the bottom of the boat. There was a hole, and he decided to fix it. When he finished painting the boat, he received his money and left. The next day the owner of the boat found the painter and presented him with a beautiful check. The painter was surprised. “But you already paid me for painting the boat!” – He said. “This is not for the paint job, it’s for having fixed the hole in the boat.” “But Mister, it was such a small job. I didn’t want to charge, surely you’re paying me too much for something so insignificant.” “No my friend, you don’t understand, let me tell you what happened. When I asked you to paint the boat I forgot to mention the leak. When the paint dried, my kids took the boat and went fishing. I wasn’t home at the time, but when I got back I noticed that they had gone out with the boat. I became desperate because I remembered that the boat had a hole. Imagine my relief and joy when I saw them return home safe and sound. I then examined the boat and realized you had fixed it. Do you realize what you did now? You saved my children’s lives; I don’t have enough to pay you for that small good deed.” There is a great example of someone who did more than what was required. He did his job with EXCELLENCE. Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an EXCELLENT SPIRIT was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm. (Daniel 6:3)
