This ultimate social ethic which Jesus challenged everyone to follow is commonly known as the Golden Rule. In other words, Jesus is saying that it is the be-all and end-all when it comes to the proper ethic of social relations. This is self-evident and resonates with our deepest nature and sensibilities. Even as it relates to the idea of natural selection, it is not our competitive tendency that enables us to thrive, but our cooperative spirit and instinct toward mutualism.
