This very important but short article needs to be read by every mum and dad and every midwife: psychologytoday/blog/isnt-what-i-expected/201410/the-voice-depression Here is an exert and if this is you - seek help: The message women are hearing may be subliminal, but it is clear. Good mothers are supposed to be nurturing, devoted, and self-sacrificing; they should put their children’s needs before theirs at all times. Presumably, they can do all of this while they continue to accomplish their own goals and maintain their sense of identity. When subscribing to this message of unyielding devotion, many find themselves clinging to a slipping sense of control or micromanaging their lives and becoming hypervigilant about their baby. Women believe they will feel better if they function this way. After all, who doesn’t feel better when things are put away and in their proper place? But for women who struggle with depression, the margin of error is quite small. The line between keeping things in control and behaving compulsively to keep things from falling apart is a very fine one, indeed. In the process, women often lose sight of what is motivating this constant struggle for excellence and perfection in the first place. Who do they do this for? For themselves? For society? For their mother? For the Jones next door? For their sanity? I suspect most women are not ready to give up these impossible standards. But they should.
