This video has gone viral a number of times, but Ive seen it shared in great numbers over the last few days, in particular. The clip being circulated is specifically 1:58-3:05 of the link Ive referenced. I have a major concern with this idea of never challenging or correcting a pastor or leader. It has reached cultic levels in many of our assemblies. Before I explain further, let me say this: 1) It is absolutely biblical to respect and honor leaders 2) I myself am a pastor and mentoring/apostolic leader With that being said, it is still dangerous to teach a dogmatic doctrine such as this - that it is NEVER appropriate to correct or question a leader. First, this video references the pastor. What happened to accountability? As a pastor, I teach all the time that those I lead are accountable to me, as I am accountable to them. While they should never disrespect me as Gods chosen leader, I do not take offense when someone has a sincere question or even a disagreement, as long as they approach me with respect. There is NO BIBLICAL DOCTRINE against this. Only those leaders with something to hide or issues with pride will be offended by anyone coming to them in love with a legitimate question or correction. Again, we must tread lightly and be respectful (1 Timothy 5:1-3, Hebrews 13:7). But to preach this from a perspective that it is never okay is erroneous. Ive heard many people preach that only someone higher can rebuke a leader. Yet, this hierarchy of leadership is birthed from culture and western ideology... not the word of God. What if no one higher is present? What if the leader is struggling to hear from God that day? For each, his own, but Ill say this... The disciples at Breath of Life International Church know that I make mistakes from time to time. Im not perfect. Some of them have met with me in the office to ask a clarifying question, point out a contradiction or share a revelation theyve received. I didnt rebuke them. I didnt tell them they were beneath me. I took it, and when needed, corrected the mistake. As a result, I grew and so did they. IM THANKFUL FOR THAT!!! Being a pastor doesnt excuse me from learning from those that I fellowship with on a general basis. Even with my own Apostle, she knows that I love and respect her dearly. Still, we may disagree from time to time. I cant imagine her saying that I never have the right to question her or operate in ministry without her expressed and specific instruction. Thats borderline idolatry and certainly a level of witchcraft and control. In fact, if I am in the wrong, I would rather those who see me continuously... those who love me and have my best interest at heart, to bring that correction. I J S... Im a leader, but I dont want anyone to equate me with God. Were just going too far with some of this... Jesus made me free! I refuse, then, to be in bondage to any man and I refuse to put anyone in bondage to me. Yes, we must follow order, and we must show respect. We must also, however, give room for iron to sharpen iron. youtu.be/kkf4scl9Ppw
