This was a beautiful response to a request that many creative folk get way too often - Photographers, Artists, Writers and the list goes on. One of the reasons it may be propagated is that so many people trying to break in to the profession, may not realize the long term effects of their willingness to work for little or nothing on the industry as a whole. You do what you need to, but you should think of the long term effect too. In a related note - I remember one of my first electronics teachers explaining to our group his philosophy on pricing for our services: He was a strong proponent of either charging the full price or not charging at all. If we choose to not charge for something, he advised us to make sure that the person we were helping out was aware of what the going rates were, and that they would be charged the full price the next time around. He would encourage us to not consistently undercut the rest of the people who make a living doing this as it is a disservice that effectively undervalues what we do as a whole. The same thing I think applies to anyone providing creative services too - and really should be thought about by the people asking for these things as well. (OK, getting off the soap-box now)
