This was a really different choreo process for me, it involved no pre-planning. The first day of the workshop we improvised on a theme of water and waves to totally different music. The result was a 3m piece to a different song that i video taped. I then took that material back into the lab, and ran its phrases to several different songs. It surprised me how well it fit to this one, as this was really far from where we started. But I chose it. I made some small timing modifications, brought it back in, and set it to this song in our next meeting. The next week I built the phrases for the first verse, and taught the floor and standing parts, and let the dancers choose on their own which part theyd perform, and we added that in, and experimented with staging. Last we added in the round of solos in the 2nd verse, and the staging changes for the chorus. The dancers were flexible, enthusiastic, and worked really hard to put this whole piece together, start to finish, in about 5 hours over 5 weeks.
