This was an interesting job, came in for valve check and carb - TopicsExpress

This was an interesting job, came in for valve check and carb balance. Valves all checked ok, but when i hooked up the balancer it indicated a large imbalance. I have found in the past that large imbalances are due to another fault lurking somewhere causing poor cylinder perfomance. Out came the scope and i started with secondary ignition checks to see if there was anything obvious. It became clear that cylinder #3 was our porblem area, along with having the lowest cylinder vacuum it also showed high spark voltage, required to initially jump the gap, and then comapred to the other cylinders it has a much higher voltage requied to maintain the spark across the gap. So...... high secondary voltage demands can be indicative of lean fuel mixture, high cylinder pressures or large plug gaps. Factor this with a low vacuum on the same cylinder and what do you think the fault was found to be? Ill leve this one open until tomorrow night for those that follow me on here to have a guess before I reveal what i found the fault to be :)
