This was my first column for the Standard on 22/10/14 The beginning of Autumn can seem quiet. Heavy rain and gusts of wind hide signs of life and muffle natural sounds. But underneath the greyness and damp puddles, trees will be reasserting themselves despite the cold. I love to watch crisp foliage beginning to evolve leaving seemingly lifeless twigs behind. I get a thrill of excitement when the golden tips of leafs force their way into our attention. Once those first tiny signs have been noticed, things accelerate at a tremendous rate. In next to no time the branches are left bare. Even the fresh morning sun will do nothing but speed up the annual turn. Of course the weather at the end of the year can discourage lengthy outings to the garden, relaxing with indoor crafts in the warm is just too tempting, but even a short walk is worth the effort. For my part, I satisfy my curiosity under normally dense pine trees, collecting cones for winter projects or seeing the village beck and its paddling ducks without the dense curtain of weeping willow. With little greenery to conceal them, I see a pair of robins skipping around the hedge looking for berries. Paths are easier to follow, where the grass has start to die back and mud has crisp peaks. Quiet this time of year maybe , but an unmissable opportunity to see familiar things changing into a different light.
