This was part of Rev. Tess Cruzs lecture in our Workers Convocation last October 20-22, 2014. She got this from the GBOD website. WHAT PATTERN OF WORSHIP SHOULD WE USE? 1. Late 18th-early 19th century [AMERICAN] Methodism 2. 19th Century Revivalism and Seeker Sensitive/MEGA-CHURCH Worship 3. Sunday School Assembly/CREATIVE Worship 4. Aesthetic/TRADITIONAL[?] Worship 5. Pentecostal and Praise [CONTEMPORARY] Worship 6. Word and Table [NEW TESTAMENT & EARLY CHURCH] WORSHIP A CASE FOR WORD AND TABLE WORD AND TABLE ALSO HAS THE CAPACITY TO AVOID THE WEAKNESSES OF THE OTHER PATTERNS: the INDIVIDUALISM OF THE REVIVAL [MEGA-CHURCH], the CONSUMER-MENTALITY OF THE SEEKER SERVICE [CONTEMPORARY], the unwieldy didacticism of the Sunday school assembly, the WORDINESS OF CREATIVE WORSHIP, the CLASS BIAS OF AESTHETIC WORSHIP, THE NOSTALGIA OF TRADITIONAL[?] WORSHIP [take note: aesthetic worship and “traditional” worship is one and the same], and what can often be THE “ME AND THE SPIRIT” INDIVIDUALISM OF PENTECOSTAL WORSHIP. How shall we worship? UNITED METHODISTS HAVE COME TO AFFIRM THE WORD AND TABLE PATTERN as found in our Hymnal and supported with the resources in The United Methodist Book of Worship and The General Board of Discipleship OFFERS THE BEST ANSWER. IT IS NOT MERELY ONE OPTION AMONG MANY. With its structured flexibility aimed at forming us into the Body of Christ in our service of God, IT IS THE MOST HOLISTIC AND FAITHFUL PATTERN AVAILABLE TO US.
