This was the rhetoric of the day when women fought to vote. Its much the same as criticism I (and so many others) receive when I talk about my pretty basic beliefs: I want my daughter to know her body is her own, not public property/an object. That she deserves to set all of her own boundaries and live in the body she has without fear. I hope my example can help her escape what plagues so many of us the constant sense of not being enough. I want her to know she can aspire for anything in life, including marriage and family (or not) hoping that her interests, loves and passions and not social pressure can drive her. I want her to always know she deserves her own time, care and compassion. That her voice matters, her story matters, she matters. And that she has the right to be safe from harm, in her home, in her body, in her life. Its interesting to take a little stroll back in time to see where these words came from. The ones that call me a man hater or think Im out to overpower anyone because I believe in my own autonomy. Where believing in my voice means world domination and chaos. Im not attached to any of those words by the way. I know who I am. But these posters have me a greater appreciation for their history. Check out what the fears were when women fought to vote...
