This was written in 2011, and this is the season that I always remember and Im filled with thanksgiving again :) Thanksgiving Today Im thankful for 4 Baptist ladies--I dont even know their names. All were single moms previously in life, but God and life blessed them with spouses and families over a period of years, and they had healed. They found me when Jer was in 2nd grade. I had been a single mom for 2 years, away from my family for 6 years--I should have had it together, but I didnt. I was heavy every holiday, still focusing on what I was missing. I would call home to see what family was doing, Id hear the festiveness in the background, and it would reinforce that I wasnt there. My children would leave to be with their dad, and Id be alone on the holidays and couldnt call friends as they were all with their families. Everyone thought I was doing fine, but I was not in a good place. On Thanksgiving Day I opened my front door to these 4 ladies who brought (already made): dressing, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, a pumpkin pie, and a whole turkey. For the first time since the divorce my boys and I had Thanksgiving and I realized that 1) I had a family, 2) I needed to be giving the boys holiday traditions, 3) how much joy it brought to my home. Every year since then Ive had a full fledge Thanksgiving dinner that all 3 of us look forward to every year--with excitement and, yes, joy. Gone are the days of crying over the past, focusing on what I dont have, and only realizing and enjoying what I DO have. So, with the only tears I plan to cry this holiday season, I thank God for 4 special ladies, who didnt forget where they had been, who took time from their families to minister to me in a way that only they could--and they gave me my holiday joy back. ;*) 11/2011
