This was written with Lynn Floyd Carrigans permission; I wanted to take this opportunity to post about Equine Insurance. As you know, Lynn lost her beloved Wrangler two months ago. This was a tragic loss for our barn family and especially for the Carrigans. One thing that made it easier was her insurance. Without it, she would have had the loss and a great big medical bill. Trust me, I know. Madisons two colic surgeries totaled over $10,000, but at least I still have her. It would have been great to have had insurance, too. A mistake I will not make again. With Wrangler, his medical bills totaled about $3,500 because he passed away just after surgery started. The insurance paid all but about $150. It also paid a mortality payment to Lynn which enabled her to purchase another horse. The insurance was $341 a year. If your horse is over 15 years old, it runs closer to $600. This is for a policy of about $5,000 mortality and $7,500 major medical. Obviously, it varies with how much you insure. They will not insure your horse for more than the amount you listed as the purchase price, which they seem to take your word for. This helps for some of us who purchased lowered, but then put a ton of training which increased their value. The company Lynn uses is Broadstone Equine Insurance which was written through her Hartford Insurance agent. I see this as such a relief to know that for $350-$600 a year, I can have the piece of mind to know I can take an animal to Auburn or LSU without dreading the payback.
