This week The Northwest Louisiana Community Development - TopicsExpress

This week The Northwest Louisiana Community Development Corporation announced its intentions to sponsor a local contingent of the “Girls Who Code,” club. The national organization is setting up local chapters around the country as they seek to provide computer science education to 1 million young women by the year 2020. The clubs mission involves inspiring, educating, and equipping girls with a base of technical knowledge that will prepare them for 21st century employment opportunities. The local program is being offered for free and is open to girls from the 6th-12th grade in the Shreveport/Bossier metropolitan area. Saturday morning sessions will begin this week (January 10) and will continue until the end of May. The program will feature forty curriculum hours paired with project based group learning opportunities. According to statistics from the “Girls Who Code,” club In middle school, 74% of girls express interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), but when choosing a college major, just 0.3% of high school girls select computer science. Additionally women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but hold just 25% of the jobs in technical or computing fields.
